Manchester United’s commercial ambition led to the signing ofPaul Pogba.The Premier League side’s money men recognised the cash that could be made with the midfielder in the side and paid Juventus 89million for the privilege in 2016, effectively strong-arming Jose Mourinho into accepting the player’s arrival.That’s according to the Old Trafford manager’s adviser, Eladio Parames, who used his weekly column in Portuguese newspaper, Recordtoexplain it took United just six months to recoup the huge transfer fee and also saying Mourinho had other players in mind when discussing targets.6

He is set to play against Valencia in the club’s final Champions League group game, though a place in the last 16 is already secure.And Parames suggested the 25-year-old is being only played in the hope of drumming up interest from elsewhere to buy him.He also compares Pogba with Mario Balotelli, the hot-headed former Manchester City and Liverpool striker, Mourinho managed at Inter.6

One of these is that the same agent, Mino Raiola, represents them both.Another is that the enormous talent they both have for playing football is inversely proportional to the demands of a professional footballer.The latest events relating to the Frenchman reminded me of a famous scene played out by Balotelli when Mourinho was at Inter Milan, which demonstrates the professional irresponsibility of the Italian.The day before the game, the coach wanted to talk to the player before the list of players was put up in the dressing room.But Mario was no longer at the club. He had been invited to be a test driver for a well-known brand of cars and left. He didn’t even want to know whether or not he had been called up.Pogba hasn’t reached this extreme yet, but having his hairdresser report to the hotel where he was training for a racing special hairstyle says a lot about the players concentration before a match.And Raiola attaches little importance to the sporting behaviour of the players if he’s not doing well, he changes.
