The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which sets the laws of the game, specifically banned referees from wearing body cameras when itupdated its rules in May.Campaigners feel the amendmentwas a deliberate attempt to frustrate calls for a pilot scheme.talkSPORT understands the groups preparing a response include Ref Support UK, the Irish Soccer Referees’ Society, Offside and AusRef.It follows high-profile incidents in Ireland and Italy on Sunday.Footage emerged in June of a referee being chased and kicked by a large group of players in North London during a cup final3

Referee Daniel Sweeney, who is aged in his 50s, sustained a broken jaw and an eye socket injury after a match between Horseleap and Mullingar Town in Co Offaly. The ISRS said it was “shocked and appalled in equal measure” and called on the Football Association of Ireland to launch a campaign to end abuse.Meanwhile Riccardo Bernardini, 24, was described as in a “life-threatening condition” after being struck at a match near Rome, cracking his head on concrete as he fell.Bernardini shows off his gruesome injuries3

The incident at a game between Virtus Olympia Roma and SB Atletico Torrenova 1986 has prompted the Italian Referees Association to announce an amateur referee strike across the Lazio region this weekend. It has been described as a “unique” decision that has followed months of anger at a perceived lack of action from authorities.Qualified Italian referee Daniel Curcio, Co-Founder of international referee network Tournaments Abroad, told talkSPORT: “It is not pretty. We’re talking about 650-700 referees assaulted every year in Italy.”A Turkish referee commented on a Tournaments Abroad Facebook post: “Two assaults against my colleague in the team, once (sic) attempted with a gun.One attempt against me physically…At least 5 times waited for police escort. It is just 2 years experience of a Turkish referee and just one of the reasons why I quit.” Mr Curcio added: “It is unacceptable. The bodies that govern football should do everything within their power to reduce this phenomenon.”Campaigners also feel varying punishments prove the issue of assaults on match officials is not taken seriously enough. In Ireland the offence carries an automatic 1-year ban, in England it carries a 5-year ban and in Scotland it carries a 10-year ban.
